Frequently Asked Questions about
Angels Plus

I was just wondering how far should the plastic tube be inserted into the sponge of your Angels Plus sponge filters? Also how large of a tank will one 4" x 4" x 4" sponge filter do?

It's not very critical how far in the lift tube goes. Just keep it off the bottom so water can get into it. Filtering capacity has almost nothing to do with tank size. It has to do with bio-load, which is a product of fish metabolism combined with pH, temperature, feeding rate and water exchange. For example, if you put one 3" fish in a 100 gallon tank, it will not need a filter. If you put the same one fish in a 100 gallon tank and greatly overfeed, then it will need a substantial filter just to handle the wastes produced from the great volume of heterotrophic bacteria that the excess food will generate. In this situation, no matter how big the filter, the overfeeding will eventually kill the one fish. We could take the opposite view and consider the number or size of the filter that would be needed in a ten gallon tank, that contained twenty 3" fish. In this instance, you may need 30% or more of the volume to be filled with filtering material. We wouldn't even want to consider what would be needed if this same tank was overfed. Tank carrying capacity and needed filtration will vary greatly from one aquarist to another, depending on the many variables that can occur in each situation. This has to be figured out by each aquarist. Of course, over-filtration won't hurt, so many choose to err on the side of more. Although we don't rate ours for tank size, they are better than many rated for a 55 gallon tank.

Can I make a living raising angels?

Probably not. Very few have been successful doing this, but it is possible if you do the right things. First, you must be capable of raising a superior angel. They must be more vigorous, have better color and longer, straighter fins than your competitor's angels. If so, you will be able to justify the higher price a breeder must get. You cannot survive trying to match the price of a Florida fish farm. The next thing you must be good at, is sales. Your ability to use proven sales techniques to move your angels at fair prices will make or break you. Neither one of the above abilities by itself is likely to allow you to succeed in making a living breeding and selling angels. You must be good at both. Of course, you can always do this for a little part-time income doing something you love.
